What are advanced learner loans?
A government backed initiative that aims to provide funding for course fees for those undertaking training that will advance their careers.
If studying a level 3 or above course and are aged 19 and over at the start of the course, most people will qualify for a loan.
There are no credit checks, household income is not taken into consideration and it is easy to apply.
You won’t have to pay anything back until your income is over £25,000 per year.

What makes me eligible?
Nationality or residency status details…
- Be living in the UK on the first day of your course
- Have been living in the UK, Channel Island or Isle of Man for 3 years before starting your course
- Be a UK national or have ‘settled status’ (this means there are no restrictions on how long you can stay)
You may also qualify if you’re:
- An EU national or a family member of one
- A refugee
- A migrant worker
- The child of a Swiss national
- The child of a Turkish worker
How much will I get toward the course?
If you are eligible, you will be able to get the full amount of the Level 3 Diploma in fitness instructing and personal training course cost.
Please remember – loans have to be paid back.
Payments don’t start until April 2016 and you won’t have to pay anything back until you earn more than £25,000 a year.
How do I apply for an advanced learning loan?
You will need to get a ‘learning and funding information’ letter from your training provider before you register. Click sign up to start the application process. Once you have the letter you will need to register. To register click here for full details.
How long does the whole application process take?
It can take approx 3 weeks from start to finish. (It usually takes around 4 days to get your ‘learning and funding information’ letter from your training provider, then you will need to register your application. Once you’re registered you’ll get a letter confirming your loan – usually within 2 weeks when you apply online, postal applications take longer). NB: You can apply for a loan without a National Insurance number but you must have one before the loan can be paid.
How is the loan paid?
Once your attendance on the course has been confirmed, the loan for your agreed course fees is paid directly to the college or training organisation by Student Finance England.
Repayments start the April after you complete or withdraw from your course. You pay back your loan (plus interest) when you finish your course and earn more than £25,000 a year. Your repayments will stop if your income drops below £25,000 a year. Your annual repayment amount will be 9% of any income you earn over £25,000.
You can apply more than once
Upon completion of your course you will be eligible to apply for more Advanced Learner Loans in order to advance your learning. You can have up to 4 loans.
